Common hot water problems
- No hot water at all, or hot water that runs out quickly.
- Water leaking from the tank, the relief valve or the pipes around the unit.
- Rusty or discoloured hot water.
- A pilot light that keeps going out on a gas system, often worse on cold, windy days.
- Noises such as banging or rumbling from the tank.
Repair or replace?
Many faults, such as a failed thermostat, thermocouple, element or relief valve, can be repaired. A tank that is leaking from the body usually cannot. The plumber will tell you which applies after looking at the system.
Types of systems
Gas storage and continuous flow
Storage and continuous flow systems. Gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter.
Electric storage
Simple to replace like for like, though running costs can be higher.
Heat pump and solar
These use less energy to heat water. Ask the plumber how a heat pump performs in Bendigo's winter and whether any government rebates currently apply.
What to have ready
- The brand and size of your current system, usually on a label on the tank.
- Whether it is gas, electric, solar or heat pump.
- Where it is installed: outside, in a cupboard or in the roof.
